prologue
Photography has been around in my life for some time now. I grew up like most people taking snaps with the family camera and pasting them into the album. Some of those images will be imprinted into my mind forever. It was as a teenager that I first took up photography and I continued taking pictures while I spent years riding bikes. I switched to making bmx and skate videos during the 90’s and produced three titles that were great fun make. Eventually, I would return to the still camera inspired to a level I never would have imagined.

I work on the documentation of contemporary life on subjects which draw me in. In particular, todays fading lifestyles - a study of dying trades and professions in Britain. I am interested in how social, economic and environmental changes affect us and our landscape. Recent studies include recording the remnants of the Cold War and documenting urban renewal in my home town of Oxford, England. My images are not only environmental portraits, I also like to photograph the everyday world and I try to find an aesthetic quality in pretty much anything. I believe that through the lens we can contribute to a better understanding of each other and also find some meaning in life; perhaps because we look closer at it ? Conversely, I also think that we can simply be stoked to make a good photograph. This site consists of project work, short studies and in effect, a photographic journey. A blog site exists for commentary on whats going on. see sunilphotoblog.all images and text © Sunil Shah 2008.
